Confused

by Dorathy
(Port Angeles, Washington state, USA )

My husband had prostate cancer and had his prostate removed one year ago, we've tried different things but he has basically given up, I'm sixty four and my sex drive is nill, but now I no longer feel love from him and he seems to just be checked out of our relationship. We both still work and he's planning on retiring in a couple of years. We have money issues, gambling issues, and drinking issues, I'm not a drinker but I do smoke but trying to quit, we have so many issues I'm not even sure where to start all I know is that I'm sad and sick almost all the time 😢

Dorothy, you’re right. An awful lot of issues in your relationship. I would think the best place to start is to find a Gottman couples therapist who can do an evaluation of the strong and weak parts in your relationship. Some of your issues are individual, but you can start with relationship ones. Take a look at gottman.com and see if you can find a trained Gottman therapist in your area. As it happens, Seattle is the homebase for Gottman therapy, so you should be able to find someone nearby.

"You gave us counseling without making either one of us feel that you were taking sides.
You always maintained your impartiality with us. You encouraged Rita to be more assertive in stating what she wanted to get from your counseling sessions, as well as what she wanted to get from the relationship.
You taught both of us better communication between ourselves, which lead to an emotional comfort level between us that didn't exist before.
You took control of the direction of the session if things were not moving along.
Thanks so much
for helping us."
